New Silyl-Protecting Groups, PIES, PEAS and CHIPS.
Sadly the authorship of this article has been the subject of some debate,
and name-calling.
The article was brought to our attention by the party known as SDS.
However, the CCS admits responsibility for failing to assign authorship
correctly. This matter was brought to our attention by the party known
as DW:

| Dear sir,
I must protest at a prime example of false authorship that appeared
in Volume 3 (October) of your publication. It should be pointed out that
the ground breaking research "New Silyl- Protecting Groups, PIES, PEAS
and CHIPS", was contributed to in no part by the apparent author SDS,
and was in fact developed solely by CP (Pieman). I know this to
be the case as I was consulted about this work during it's development
and know that it is not a joint venture by any means.
I hope that a suitable erratum with be published forthwith, in order
to position the credit for this work correctly and to expose SDS, for the
charlatan that he has become. I trust that this isolated incident will
not lead to the corruption of what has become a highly regarded and influential
journal of scientific progress.
Thank you for your time,

The CCS consulted with SDS, who issued the following statement:
"I invented it, he just put it together"
The CCS felt that the authorship should be amended to include SDS
and 'Pieman', this was done and DW informed. DW subsequently
made accusations to a third party, these were brought to the attention
of the CCS, by SDS:

As editor of this fine journal I would like to bring
to your attention the following. It would appear that an ex-colleague and
co-worker is trying to claim my intellectual property to be his and his
alone. I would like to state at this point that although I acknowledge
the contribution of one
Pieman I do still maintain that the initial concept of the orthogonal
protecting groups PIES, PEAS and CHIPS, along with the hitherto unpublished
work investigating LAGER and KEBAB are mine. I would appreciate you passing
on these comments to the charlatans who have sought to blacken my name.
Yours etc.

Since the matter remains unresolved, the CCS felt that the only courses
of action were to air the views of those concerned or withdraw the article. |
