New Uses for Old Reagents, Part 1: Silicone Oil - An Effective Floor Polish.
Silicone oil is compared to conventional wax-based products for its ability to render a super-smooth finish to any surface.
Dr R. UK
pp 117-118
New Uses for Old Reagents, Part 2: Silicone Oil/Water - An Effective Heating Medium.
A silicone oil/water mixture is compared to conventional heating media and found to be particularly effective for the heating of vegetable carbohydrate matter.
Dr R. UK
pp 119-120
Elemental Analysis: How to Obtain the Results you Want.
The use of the Aldrich catalogue's molecular formula index to identify and submit a compound of the same molecular formula results in a greater degree of accuracy from this essential technique.
Dr H. UK
pp 121-124
Chiral Separation of Levo- and Dextro-Phlogiston.
Racemic phlogiston was extracted from a range of flammable materials and each isomer was separated using classic chiral chromatography. Fire causing ability was limited to the dextro isomer while the levo isomer was found to be a fire retardant and hair growth promoter. The implications of these findings are discussed and suggested synthetic routes outlined.
DM, UK
pp 125-130
Review: The Refrigerator Rearrangement Reaction in Organic Synthesis.
A review highlighting the interesting decompositions that can happen following the storage of compounds overnight in a refrigerator. The Refrigerator Rearrangement normally follows after a 15 step synthesis to a crucial intermediate during doctorate work. We compared Smeg, Westinghouse, GE, Samsung and Bosch.

pp 131-134
The Rôle of Camphor Sulfonic Acid as a Base.
Despite it's more familiar use as a proton source, detailed consideration of reaction mechanisms indicates that camphor sulfonic acid can be used a base in a range of processes. Interestingly, the absolute configuration of the acid has no influence on the reactions considered; a discussion considering this fact and the effect of the proposed mechanism on the mood of a PhD supervisor is presented.
Dr S. UK
pp 135-138
Optimisation of Noise in EPR Spectroscopy.
A convenient way of visualising desired small multiplets in EPR spectra.
AM and VL, UK
pp 139-140
Upon Cleaning Glassware II.
Removal of stubborn stains from the sides of glassware using expensive starting material and solvent that was previously unsuccessful at removing the same stain.
AM and VL, UK
pp 141-144
Greases as Internal NMR Standards.
AM and VL, UK
pp 145-146
New and Expensive Routes to Sodium Chloride.
Sodium chloride can be easily prepared via a number of expensive reagents. Detailed NMR studies show that expensive starting materials decompose readily to ultra pure sodium chloride.
Dr R. UK
pp 147-150
Total Synthesis of Vitamin B12 From Coal.
An extensive study in futility as your supervisor wouldn't buy you that oh-so important starting material.
Dr R. UK
pp 151-156
